PRINCIPALS

Daniel F. Special, M.A.

Daniel F. Special, M.A. is a professional mediator, consultant to business, businessman, and co-developer of the CIDAC Intercorporate Dispute Resolution System. Since his inception in the dispute resolution field in 1994, Mr. Special's mediation experience has included service as a professional neutral in the resolution of multi-party construction contract claims, federal employment discrimination cases, intra-family business matters, organizational workplace conflicts, and leaseholder disputes. Prior to his career in professional dispute resolution, Mr. Special was Vice President of a specialty technical services firm in which he was responsible for contract negotiations and administration of the firm's commercial projects. In his previous position, Mr. Special was Personnel Manager at the Dupont-Belcan regional engineering office-Pittsburgh (REOP) where, as part of his professional responsibilities, he served as the site legal liaison to outside counsel on employment liability matters, arbitration proceedings, and planned and participated in numerous multi-discipline project conflict resolution conferences. Prior to this, Mr. Special served in a personnel capacity for a division of Day & Zimmerman, Inc., which provided project technical services to the commercial and industrial engineering and construction industries. In addition to his professional experience, he holds a Masters Degree in Personnel and Industrial Relations from St. Francis College (1983) and a B.A. in English from Duquesne University (1980). He is a member of the executive committee of the Business Dispute Resolution Alliance, the Construction Claims Forum, Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution (SPIDR), Pennsylvania Council of Mediators (PCM), in addition to serving as an EEOC appointed panel mediator for the Pittsburgh area, and as a mediator and former Board President of the nonprofit Pittsburgh Mediation Center. Mr. Special has also received appointment to mediate cases under the enforcement jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Labor as part of a distinguished national panel.

Jerry R. Hogenmiller, J.D.

Mr. Hogenmiller is a practicing attorney and the Managing Director of the law firm of Thomson, Rhodes & Cowie, P .C. He has over 19 years' experience as an attorney, mediator, negotiator, and ADR consultant in several areas including employment/labor, construction, and complex commercial disputes. He has provided seminars and training manuals to hundreds of corporations, nonprofit groups, and labor organizations on employment and ADR issues. In addition to being licensed to practice law in all state and federal courts in Pennsylvania and Illinois, he also is licensed in the United States Tax Court and the United States Supreme Court. Among his many professional associations, he is a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association, Illinois Bar Association, Pennsylvania Council of Mediators, Pittsburgh Human Resource Association, Mediation Council of Western Pennsylvania, Labor and Employment Committees of the Allegheny County and Pennsylvania Bar Associations, Pittsburgh Mediation Center, Business Dispute Resolution Alliance, Three Rivers Area Labor Management Committee and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. In addition to his law practice and management responsibilities, he recently served as outside general counsel to a $200 million corporation where he provided strategic legal management, oversight and litigation services for all corporate, regulatory, employment and litigation matters. Since 1998, Mr. Hogenmiller has been a mediator with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and serves on the U.S. Department of Labor's National Panel of Mediators. He has mediated complex insurance, construction and commercial disputes and has served as a court appointed arbitrator. Mr. Hogenmiller has also provided negotiation, fact-finding (with a concentration in the sexual harassment area) and ADR/conflict management consultation services to numerous clients. Mr. Hogenmiller has extensive ADR training which includes mediation certificates from the Harvard Law School and the Pittsburgh Mediation Center. He is a Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Denison University and the Northwestern University School of Law. He also has taken MBA graduate courses from the Kellogg School of Management and the Katz School of Management.
